Choose the letters for your next round
Pick a starting letter for a word game, choose a spelling prompt, or practice matching uppercase and lowercase. This random letter generator uses the English alphabet. Keep all 26 letters or select a smaller set. Each spin picks one letter.
How to use the Letters wheel
Choose the letters to include
In Setup, choose All, Vowels or Consonants. Use the alphabet checkboxes to add or leave out individual letters. A new wheel starts with all 26 uppercase English letters.
Spin for one letter
Select Spin in the center, or focus it and press Enter or Space. Wait for the pointer and result. A, a and Aa change how a letter looks, not which letter it is.
Keep picking or start another round
The summary shows the last pick. Results lists your picks. Close dismisses the result popup without undoing the pick. Turn on Remove each winner after picking if you want each letter only once in the round.
Set up the alphabet
The alphabet selector shows the letters included in your setup. Presets, checkboxes and Exclude letters all edit this selection.
Start with a complete letter set
All selects A through Z. Vowels selects A, E, I, O and U. Consonants selects the other 21 letters, including Y.
A preset replaces the earlier selection. It is a quick way to return to a complete set after making custom changes. Selecting a set you already have keeps your results and removals.
Include individual letters
Select or clear the checkbox for any letter. For a game using only A, B and C, include those three letters and leave the rest out. A single selected letter is also a valid wheel.
You can add a letter after choosing Vowels or Consonants. The preset does not restrict later checkbox choices. Each included letter counts once, even when its display shows both cases.
Build a smaller set from an empty draft
Clear unchecks the alphabet so you can select a new small set. While nothing is selected, the last applied wheel and round stay in place and an error asks you to select at least one letter.
Select a letter to apply a valid set. Undo discards the empty draft. New round also returns the editor to the applied set and starts that round again.
Type the letters to leave out
Expand Exclude letters and enter English letters together or separated by spaces, commas or line breaks. BCD leaves out B, C and D. Uppercase and lowercase have the same effect, and repeated letters do not exclude anything extra.
The field and grid describe the same selection. After choosing Vowels, the field lists the consonants left out. Removing a letter from that exclusion text includes it again. Press Enter to apply a valid edit, or leave the field. Shift+Enter inserts a line break. The field accepts up to 5,000 characters.
Know when an edit starts a new round
A valid preset or checkbox change applies immediately. Typed exclusions apply on Enter or when you leave the field. If the included letters change, the current results and round removals clear for a new round. Undo restores the earlier selection and round.
An edit with the same effective selection keeps the round. Changing case also keeps it. Settings such as sound, theme and spin speed do not change the selected letters.
Keep the round while fixing an edit
Digits, accented letters and punctuation other than commas are not accepted in Exclude letters. An invalid or empty draft leaves the last valid wheel, results and removals intact. Spin, starting auto-spin, Save, Download and Share need a valid selection.
Correct the field and press Enter or leave it, choose a preset, or use the checkboxes. Undo first discards an unapplied edit. Changing an image or sound does not apply an invalid letter draft. Only the applied setup is saved, so do not rely on reloading to recover unfinished text.
Understand the letters in each draw
You can change a letter's display without changing the selected alphabet. Round removals affect which letters remain available.
Show uppercase, lowercase or both forms
Use A for uppercase, a for lowercase or Aa for both cases together. Aa is one letter shown in two forms. All still contains 26 letter identities, not 52 separate uppercase and lowercase outcomes.
Changing case preserves results, removals and chances. The wheel, summary and earlier picks in Results follow the new style. Undo can restore the previous display style.
Read the selected and remaining counts
The selected count belongs to your configured alphabet. The remaining count belongs to this round. If you selected 24 letters and two have been picked with winner removal on, Setup still shows 24 selected while the summary shows 22 remaining of 24.
With winner removal on, picked letters remain checked in Setup but leave the available draw pool. They return for New round. Changing the selection makes a new round rather than editing just the remaining pool.
Know what changes a letter's chance
Each available letter has the same chance on the next spin. With all 26 available, that is 1 in 26 per letter. With only the five vowels available, it is 1 in 5. Paired display does not double a letter's chance.
The wheel draws from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random source. It selects a letter before the animation finishes. Duration, speed, colors, pictures and 2D or 3D do not favor a letter. Repeats and uneven short runs can happen when repeat picking is allowed.
Continue, remove a letter or start again
Keep the same alphabet across repeated picks, or use removal to work through it once.
Pick each letter at most once
Turn on Remove each winner after picking to leave earlier picks out of later draws. You can enable it after making picks. Those picked identities leave the pool immediately without clearing Results.
Turn it off to allow picked letters again. Manually removed letters stay out until Undo or New round. In paired display, removing Aa removes the letter A in every display style.
After removal, the wheel redraws with the remaining letters. Read the removed winner in the last-pick summary or Results. It may no longer be shown on the wheel.
Leave out just the picked letter
With the result popup on and automatic winner removal off, choose Remove picked entry. It removes that picked letter from the remaining pool and keeps the result in history. Undo restores it.
Spin again makes another pick. Close and the close icon keep the completed pick and dismiss the popup. Closing does not put a manually removed letter back.
Restore a recent edit or round action
Undo can restore a pick, manual removal, membership edit, case change or New round. For an invalid or unfinished exclusion edit, the first Undo simply returns to the applied selection.
The session keeps up to 10 recent checkpoints. One latest checkpoint is retained across reload. Named saves and downloaded wheel files do not include this Undo history.
Use the selected alphabet again
New round clears the picks and round removals, then makes your configured letters available again. It keeps the chosen case, selection and customization. It does not select All unless All was already your setup.
When no letters remain, the last pick stays visible and further spins stop. Use New round, Undo or a deliberate selection change. This differs from an empty draft, which has not replaced the applied wheel.
Review the picks in the current round
Results shows the newest 100 picks, newest first, with their pick numbers. A Letters round can retain up to 2,000 picks. At that limit, start a New round to continue.
The last-pick summary stays visible on both Setup and Results. Case changes update the displayed form of earlier picks without treating them as different letters. New round clears the list; Undo can restore the prior round.
Make repeated picks automatically
Automatic play starts only when you request it. A valid nonempty selection is required.
Run a series of letter picks
Choose Start auto-spin to begin. The control changes to Stop auto-spin. Stop cancels the automatic activity, including an unfinished animation. Completed picks remain in Results. Escape also stops automatic play.
Automatic play stops when no letters remain, the round reaches 2,000 picks, the page becomes hidden or you leave it. A result popup or Customize pauses picks while open. Opening file actions such as Open, Save or Share link stops automatic play. Selection and case edits also stop it.
Set time between automatic picks
In Customize under Motion, set Pause between automatic spins from 2 to 60 seconds. The default is 5 seconds. Spin duration controls the animation separately.
If the result popup is open, close it before the next automatic pick can proceed. Turning Show result popup off lets you follow picks in the summary and Results instead.
Choose how to view the wheel
View changes keep your alphabet, chances and round.
Switch the wheel's presentation
Choose 2D for a flat wheel or 3D for a tilted view. Both use the same selection and Spin button. The view control is locked during a draw and while auto-spin is active.
The view returns to 2D on reload. It is not stored in named saves, downloaded files or shared links.
Show the wheel without the controls
Use Full screen in the header to hide the surrounding controls. The picked letter remains below the wheel, including when Show result popup is off. Press Escape to return.
Full screen depends on browser support and permission. It keeps the current alphabet and round. Stop auto-spin before returning to Setup if you need to edit the letters.
Reach the same actions on a smaller screen
Use More when header actions move into the compact menu. New, Open, Save and Share link keep the same behavior. Download has its own header icon. Scroll to the setup controls below the wheel when needed.
Tab moves between controls. Use Space on a focused letter checkbox and the arrow keys on the case radio group. To spin from the keyboard, focus Spin and press Enter or Space. Escape closes ordinary dialogs or exits Full screen. On Setup and Results, Left, Right, Home and End move between the tabs.
Change the wheel's appearance
Open Customize for appearance, sound and motion. Valid settings save as you change them. Done closes the dialog. The close icon, Escape or an ordinary click outside Customize also closes it.
Choose a wheel theme
Choose Bright, Ocean or Sunset under Appearance. A theme changes the wheel colors without changing the selected letters, their chances or the round.
Letters does not have per-letter color or weight controls. Use the theme for the whole wheel.
Put a picture in the Spin button
Use the center-image upload to choose a PNG, JPEG or WebP up to 2 MB and no larger than 8,192 pixels in either dimension. The picture is cropped to a square for the center of the wheel.
Remove center image clears that picture. Your letters, Results and removals stay in place. The uploaded image is kept in this browser and can travel in a downloaded wheel file.
Add or remove a wheel background
Choose a PNG, JPEG or WebP with the same 2 MB and 8,192-pixel limits for the whole-wheel picture. The image is cropped to a square and replaces the colored slice fills. Choose a picture that leaves the letter labels readable.
Remove wheel image restores the selected theme colors. Neither adding nor removing the picture changes a letter's chance.
Return to the default wheel look
Reset appearance restores Bright and removes the center and whole-wheel pictures. It keeps the alphabet selection, case, results and round removals.
This action does not reset sound or motion settings. Use the specific picture-removal buttons if you only want to remove one image.
Choose the sound for each part of a pick
Spinning sound and winner sound are separate choices. New wheels use Click while spinning and Applause 2 after a pick.
Control whether the wheel makes sound
Use Mute in the header or turn off Enable sound in Customize to silence both spinning and winner audio. Volume runs from 0 to 100. At 0 the wheel is muted. Unmute from 0 restores volume 40.
Audio starts only after a Spin or preview gesture. If it stays quiet, check Enable sound, the volume, the selected sound and your browser or device sound settings. No sound starts just because the page opens.
Pick a spinning sound
Under While spinning, choose Click, Drum roll, My audio or Off. Click follows the segment crossings. Drum roll can continue during a longer spin.
Preview spin sound lets you check the selection without making a pick. It changes to Stop preview while active. Preview needs enabled sound and volume above 0. Closing Customize, muting or replacing the sound stops the preview.
Use your own sound file
For My audio, choose an MP3, WAV, OGG, M4A or WebM file up to 5 MB that this browser can play. Uploading does not play it automatically. Wait for the saved filename or correct any playback error, then use Preview.
Custom spin audio plays once at normal speed and ends when the recording or spin ends. Winner audio plays for at most 30 seconds. Remove audio clears that file and returns spinning to Click or the winner sound to Applause. Images and audio are included in Download, but omitted from Share link.
Set the winner sound separately
Under After a pick, choose Applause, Applause 2, Ta-da, Chime, My audio or Off. Turning this sound off leaves your spinning-sound choice available.
Use Preview winner sound to listen without picking a letter. My audio has its own upload, filename and Remove audio action. Both sound previews respect mute and volume.
Write the result heading
Enter a Winner message under After a pick. It can contain up to 300 characters. Leave it blank to use the default Letters result heading.
The message changes the popup heading, not the letter that is picked. A saved wheel or setup link can carry the message, so review it before sharing.
Set the pace and result feedback
These settings keep the selected alphabet and current round. A slower spin does not change the odds.
Choose how long the spin lasts
Spin duration sets the total animation time from 1 to 60 seconds. It applies to manual and automatic picks. Pause between automatic spins is a separate setting.
The browser's reduced-motion preference skips the animated spin, idle rotation and celebrations. The letter is still selected. Enabled winner sound can still play.
Choose the turning pace
Spin speed offers Slow, Normal and Fast. It changes how the wheel turns within the chosen duration.
Changing speed does not add or remove letters, weight a result or start a new round.
Keep the idle wheel moving
Slow rotation when ready gently turns the ready wheel before a spin. It is silent and does not select a letter. After a pick, the idle movement stops.
Use New round or New, or turn the setting off and on, to enable idle movement again. Turn it off for a still wheel. Reduced motion also suppresses this movement.
Choose or preview an effect
Choose Confetti 1, Confetti 2, Fireworks, Stars, Color burst or Off. New wheels start with Confetti 2.
Preview celebration shows the effect without making a pick or changing the round. Use Stop preview to end it. With Off selected or reduced motion enabled, the preview explains why no effect plays.
Choose where to read the result
Show result popup opens a dialog after a completed pick. It contains the letter, Spin again, Close and, when available, Remove picked entry.
Turn it off to read the last-pick summary and Results without the dialog. Full screen retains a letter result below the wheel even with the popup off.
Keep or share a Letters wheel
The working wheel saves automatically in this browser. Save makes a separate named copy. Download keeps a portable backup. Share link gives someone the setup for a fresh round. Apply valid letter edits before saving or exporting.
| Action | What it does | What it keeps | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save | Keep a named copy in this browser. | Selected letters, case, settings, uploaded images and audio, results and round removals. | Later working changes do not update that copy. Save again explicitly. Named wheels do not sync across browsers and do not include Undo history. |
| Download | Back up or move the wheel. | A wheel JSON file with the setup, uploaded media, results and removals. | Import through Open where this app is available. Files are limited to 30 MB and do not include Undo history. |
| Share link | Start someone with your letter selection. | Selected letters, case, winner-removal preference, message and customization. | Starts a fresh round without results, removals or uploaded images and audio. 2D or 3D is not included. |
Share links open a fresh setup on another device without uploaded media or Results. Download a wheel file for a backup or to move the current round and media. Review messages, results and media before sharing a file.
Return to the applied wheel
Valid letter and customization changes save to the current working wheel in this browser. Returning to Letters can restore the selection and round when browser storage is available.
An invalid or empty draft does not replace that applied wheel. 2D and 3D return to 2D on reload. Keep a named copy or downloaded backup when you need a particular setup to remain available.
Keep a separate copy
Open Save, enter a Wheel name and choose Save wheel. Names can contain up to 60 characters. You can keep up to 20 named wheels across all four tools in this browser.
Reusing a name asks before replacing that copy. Cancel keeps it unchanged. Wait for the saved confirmation. Later working results or settings do not update the named copy until you save it again.
Load a wheel you saved earlier
Open lists named wheels with the most recently saved first. Select one to load its setup and retained results. Opening another Letters wheel can be undone. Opening a wheel for a different tool takes you to that tool.
Delete asks before removing the named copy. It keeps the currently open wheel. Cancel keeps the saved copy.
Move a complete wheel file
Download creates my-wheel.json. In Open, find Import a wheel file and select Choose wheel file. A successful import loads the setup, current round and included media. Use Save afterward if you want a named copy in this browser.
Imports and downloads are limited to 30 MB. If an export is too large, remove some media and try again. For an invalid file or missing media, use an intact file downloaded from this app. Unsupported letter settings or result records are rejected before replacing the current Letters wheel.
Start with the default alphabet
New replaces the current Letters wheel with all 26 uppercase letters and default settings. Undo can restore the replaced wheel. Named saved copies remain available.
New round keeps your current selection, case and settings and restores its available letters. Use it when you want another round with the same setup, rather than a default wheel.
Back up a wheel you need to keep
No account is needed. Working state, named wheels and uploaded media stay in this browser on this device. They do not sync to other browsers. Anyone using this browser may be able to open its saved wheels.
Private browsing, storage limits or clearing site data can prevent recovery. If saving fails, follow the message and download a backup while the wheel is available. A downloaded file contains its results and media. Anyone with a setup link can read its selection and message.
Delete this app's data in this browser
In Customize, open Saved data and select Reset all saved data. Read the confirmation. Cancel keeps the data. Confirming deletes working wheels, results, named copies and stored media across all four tools, restores defaults and clears Undo. The deletion cannot be undone.
Wait for the Saved data deleted confirmation. If deletion fails or is incomplete, some data may remain. Follow the message and try again, or clear this site's data in browser settings. Cancel after a failure does not restore anything already deleted. Files already downloaded outside the browser are not deleted.
Letters wheel questions
How do I put all 26 letters on the wheel?
Choose All in Setup. It replaces your custom selection with A through Z. If earlier picks or removals have reduced the remaining pool, use New round to make all selected letters available again.
Why is Y under Consonants?
This tool uses A, E, I, O and U as its five-vowel preset. Y belongs to the 21-letter Consonants preset. Use the individual checkboxes if your activity needs Y included with the vowels.
Does Aa create 52 possible results?
No. Aa shows the uppercase and lowercase forms of one letter together. The full alphabet still has 26 letter identities. Removing Aa also keeps A or a out if you change display style later.
Can I spin only A, B and C?
Yes. Select those three letters and leave the rest unchecked. Clear gives you an empty draft to start from, while preserving the applied round until you select at least one letter. You can also make a valid one-letter wheel.
Can I enter words or letters from another alphabet?
The Letters wheel accepts English A through Z. Words, accented letters, digits and symbols are not separate choices here. Use the Wheel of Names tool for your own words or other custom entries.
Why did the same letter come up again?
With winner removal off, a picked letter stays available and can be picked again. Turn on Remove each winner after picking to leave earlier picks out of later draws in this round. A few random spins do not have to give different letters.
Why does Setup show more letters than the remaining count?
Setup shows the configured selection. The remaining count leaves out picked letters when winner removal is on, plus manually removed letters. Those removals belong to the round. They do not uncheck the configured alphabet.
Why is the old wheel still visible after Clear?
Clear creates an empty draft. The app keeps the last valid wheel and round until you choose at least one letter. The local error and disabled actions prevent that empty draft from becoming a draw setup. Choose letters, select a preset or use Undo.
Why does Exclude letters show an error?
Use English letters, commas or whitespace. Digits, accented letters and other punctuation are invalid. An exclusion that leaves no letters is also invalid. Correct the text and press Enter or leave the field. The applied round stays intact while you fix it.
Will changing uppercase to lowercase erase my picks?
No. A, a and Aa are display choices for the same letters. Results and removals remain in the round. Earlier picks in Results follow the current style. Changing which letters are included starts a new round with Undo.
Why is the last picked letter no longer on the wheel?
Winner removal and manual removal redraw the wheel with only the remaining choices. The summary and Results retain the picked letter even after its segment is removed. Read the saved result there rather than expecting it to stay under the pointer.
How does the wheel choose a random letter?
It uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographically secure random source. Every available letter has the same chance. The animation shows a choice already made, so display style and spin settings do not favor a letter. Letters has no per-letter weighting control.
Why is the wheel quiet?
Check Mute, Enable sound, Volume and the separate While spinning and After a pick choices. Try the sound preview and check browser or device sound settings. Reduced motion skips segment-crossing animation, so Click ticking may be absent even when winner audio is enabled.
How do I keep the same wheel in another browser?
Download the wheel file and import it through Open in a browser with this app available. The file includes results and uploaded media. A Share link starts fresh and leaves those out. Named saves stay in the original browser.
Why has the wheel stopped making picks?
The remaining pool may be empty, an edit may be invalid, or the round may have reached 2,000 picks. Read the nearby message. Correct a draft or use New round as appropriate. Auto-spin also stops when the page becomes hidden or you leave it.
Can Undo recover Reset all saved data?
No. The confirmed reset deletes this app's data across all four tools in this browser and clears Undo. Cancel before confirming to keep it. An intact wheel file you downloaded earlier can still be imported through Open.
